Deal's Blue Mermaid back Hugh's Big Fish Fight

As you may have seen from the local press this week, one of our local chippy's has stepped up to the mark to support Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's Big Fish Fight.

The Blue Mermaid Fish Bar in Victoria Road, Deal has been selling locally sourced battered Mackerel since last last Thursday.

Owner Sam Sidhu said "the Mackerel has been selling well since Thursday. On Saturday we actually sold more Mackerel than Cod. It is proving to be very popular as a lunchtime snack and its got our customers talking about the issue"

Customers to the Blue Mermaid were also treated to free tasters of sprats fresh off the beach at Deal. Sam wants to make seasonal, local sourced fish part of his menu. He hopes to be selling locally fished Pollock from April onwards.

As Sam says "locally caught fish is more sustainable. Its better for the local economy as well as better quality and a cheaper meal to our customers".

Sam's sign in support of BFF
Hugh's campaign against wasteful fish discards, getting people to try fish other than cod or tuna and getting Chippies to try something different like Mackerel has had a great impact nationally. So far over 632 thousand people have signed to support the campaign. http://www.fishfight.net/

Why not drop in the Blue Mermaid and try some Mackerel ? You can support the campaign locally by approaching your local cafe or chippie. You can find our Deal With It Poster here

  1. Apart from the fact he cant even spell Mackerel, The Cod is poor quality the batter is swimming in stale oil. Would never eat here again. Plus the fish is frozen not fresh. Middle Street Fish and Chips is far far superior.

  2. I would never go back for similar reasons, but mainly because behind the counter looks filthy as did the owners clothes. Never seen Mackerel on the menu. Far better places to have good fish in Deal town.

  3. We had the best fish and chips ever tried in Kent in here. Can't wait to go back!

  5. I think the comments above are not fair. I've just moved to Deal and i've had fish n chips in all of them to establish the best. Blue Mermaid has superior chips to anywhere else in Deal and the fish is 7/10. Middle St comes in a close 2nd, with the chips being greasier but the fish being 8/10. Sam however is a lovely bloke, very warm and inviting. I've had far worse than this establishment, and he is consistent in delivering a good meal on a Friday when you crave it most.

  6. I had the Blue Mermaid chips at the weekend and looked up the name so I could leave good comment about it and to alert visitors. They are the best chips in Deal, no question. They looked hand sliced as well as freshly cooked well sourced potatoe. In fact they were the best chips I've had in ages anywhere. They were served with a smile unlike Middle Street fish and chip shop.
I will be going back to try the Mackerel and will be telling everyone I know in Deal to go to this place. Great stuff.

    1. I can only guess that these people have been put up to making these comments. Try the fish for yourselves, its bland, and to be honest I dont think its cod !

    2. Food Standards agency only give this business a FOOD HYGIENE RATING of 2
This speaks for itself as it means IMPROVEMENT NECESSARY !!
      Avoid this place..no pun intended

  7. Beware. Food Standards Agency gave this takeaway one out of five for hygiene. You are safer walking down the road to the Walmer Fish & Chips who got a five and the food is good quality. If that is too far Mario's got a four. Middle Street in Deal was slightly better with a two.
