Kingdown Beach Huts
Kingsdown ConservationGroup
KINGSDOWN CONSERVATION GROUP BULLETIN NUMBER 16 – FEBRUARY 2013
URGENT – URGENT -- URGENT PLANNING
However busy you are, this development on Kingsdown Beach requires your urgent attention, please. It will take you only a minute to read.
An application has been made to install 12 wheeled huts on Kingsdown beach. They are 5.5 metres long and will be used exclusively by chalet owners from Kingsdown holiday park. The planning applicant is a firm called Tingdene; you can look them up on www.tingdene.co.uk.. They make mobile homes. This is what their huts will look like:
And this is where the huts will be installed. The beach is a legally-protected Site of Special Scientific Interest and it’s immediately overlooked by the Kent Downs AONB and Kingsdown Conservation Area
You may know that Kingsdown Holiday Park is owned by Tingdene. But did you realise that they also own Kingsdown beach (outlined in black above)?
Many villagers are saying already that, if successful, this application will eventually lead to the destruction of all that we love so much about our precious, unspoilt bit of seaside – where we meet up with friends, walk our dogs, play with our kids or quietly sit and dream.
Full details of the application can be found on DDC’s website www.dover.gov.uk. Navigate to the Planning Section and then submitting comments on planning applications. The reference number is DOV/12/01016.
If you want to do something about this development, please remember that no-one will fight our corner for us; least of all our local planning committee.
We have to do it ourselves. So please think about what it means to you and, when you are ready, hit the Dover website and record your comments – the deadline is March 15.
Other KCG news will follow soon.

Deal Fairtrade Fortnight 2013
From East Kent Mercury
"Fairtrade supporters in the Dover and Deal area will be campaigning from Sunday at schools, businesses, coffee mornings and lunches to kick-start this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight.
There will also be a chance to take part in a meeting with Henry Matenda from Kasinthula Sugar Cane Growers’ Association in Malawi, south east Africa.
Pam Brivio, secretary of Dover Fairtrade Town Network, said: “These Meet the Producer events are a wonderful opportunity to hear about the lives of producers and the difference that Fairtrade makes to their communities.”
Fairtrade Fortnight continues until March 10 and, following on from 2012’s Take a Step theme, the slogan for this year is Go Further for Fairtrade in 2013. ... full story here

Deal With IT's Secretary Victoria Nicholls writes a regular column in the East Kent Mercury:
What a to do about the discovery of horse meat in convenience food! Well, you get what you pay for in this life and we have allowed big business to tell us that we want cheap, fast food that is leading to an explosion of obesity and diabetes in Western cultures.
We react with horror when we learn that horse meat has been discovered in the food that millions of people have been eating as a matter of course for years. There is no evidence that horse meat is in any way more harmful than any other kind of meat – the French have always eaten it – but shouldn’t our horror be reserved for the under-cover dealings that have led to someone substituting horse meat for beef?
There has to be suspicion that the power of the supermarket has some responsibility for this situation. To continue to make us believe that we need to buy cheap food, they have to continually chase their suppliers for cheaper and cheaper food production to put items on the shelves. Is it any wonder that producers also look for other ways to cut costs and increase profits?
Fifty years ago we used to spend 40% of our income on food. Today it is 10% and the quality of the food that we put on the table has suffered as a result.
We need to buy our food locally, know where it comes from and, most of all, learn to cook!

Victoria's Green Matters - 7th Feb 2013
Deal With IT's Secretary Victoria Nicholls writes a regular column in the East Kent Mercury:
There was a very worrying report last week about the amount of crude oil and other contaminants that are being allowed to leak into the North Sea daily despite assurances from oil companies that they are improving their record regarding spills. There were 429 reported oil and chemical spills in the UK North Sea alone last year.
Oil company Shell has obtained permission to drill in the environmentally sensitive area off Alaska but has recently had a disaster when its rig ran aground and was destroyed. This has cost the company $90 million so far but its controversial plan to resume drilling this summer is still undergoing reviews. We can all remember BP’s catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico which cost 11 human lives and was a disaster for wildlife in the area as well as a loss of livelihood for fishing communities.
The World Wildlife Fund has called for a halt to this unseemly rush to exploit the unspoilt areas of the world, to stop subsidies to oil and gas companies and to ban all companies with a poor safety record.
We know that the era of easily obtainable, cheap oil is virtually over. Now is the time to be putting all our efforts and ingenuity into finding ways to produce renewable energy from wind, wave and solar technology. We also know that technology will not be able to solve all our problems; that we cannot continue to be profligate with energy and must live a simpler life.

Coldblow Woods planning application for fence ...
Thanks to Harold at the Walmer Web for this story;
PLANNERS ASKED TO CONSIDER COLDBLOW FENCING PROJECT
Dover District Council planners have received an application from the owner of the former MOD playing field at Coldblow in Ripple to reinstate and repair an existing boundary fence and gates.
These, it is explained, have been vandalised over the years and the plan is to install a 1.5-metre high pvc coated chain link fence round the perimeter of the 6.07-hectare site with 2-metre high gates on the Coldblow Lane entrance. The application (reference DOV/13/00039) can be seen on the district council's website at: http://planning.dover.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=summary&keyVal=DCAPR_220909
