Deal With It - HooHaa Saturday 28th Jan

Thank you to everyone who came to our annual gathering - the HooHaa - on Saturday. Great to see everyone.

Deal With It - Transition Deal is in pretty good shape - we had a good year raising funds for our activities thanks to Deal Folk by the Sea, School and Adrian & Sue Sullivan's Open Garden last June. We are very grateful to them for their support.

It has allowed us to buy flags and pickers for our beach cleans, flag for DWI and fund things like the Transition Supper and launching the Deal Hop Farm.

We have had busy year with holding 8 beach cleans, involving some 176 volunteers with over 300 volunteer hours and some 420kgs collected. We held three Seedy Saturday's and a Winter Solstice celebration.

Meetings on Climate Change conference at the end of 2015, worked with Kent Wildlife Trust on their Guardians of Deep project, we supported DDC's Youth volunteer week and Coastal Towns Group. We had stalls at the Smugglers Festival on Walmer Green.

We had a Transition Supper with inspirational speaker Naresh Giangrande from Totnes Transition. This inspired us to look at a community hop growing/brewing project and a repairs cafe for 2017.

Locally our colleagues in Dover Transition have been a welcome addition to the district and we are developing good contact with new Transition Hub in London & SE.

2017 has already started well with a film show of the french film Demain, Beach clean and launch of the Deal Hop Farm...

Deal With It HooHa 31st January 2015

Deal With It had its Annual General HooHa (like a AGM but with considerable more cake) at the Landmark Cafe on Saturday 31st January 2015.

In all we had about a record 35 attending the event which is a bit of a record.

There was great vibe - we managed to generate a lot of energy, ideas and raw enthusiasm for the coming year.

We used an exhibition of photos of some of the things we had done in 2014 which were a great talking point for people involved on those events but also a great way to explain what a transition group does to the public or people just wanting to find out a little more.

The formal business was done at a canter - Steve Wakeford, Vicky Nicholls and Jane Stubbington were thanked for their work in 2014 and re-appointed as Coordinator, Secretary and Treasurer respectively.

We had a number of new volunteers who wanted to get involved in the Organising Group and we will publish more on that after the first meeting on the 21st Feb.

The 'Postcard to Deal' worked well when we were engaging with people - so we will continue to use on our events. Thanks to Landmark, Golf Road Centres and Sea Cafe and Platform 1 cafe for hosting.

Vicky is collating all the ideas from the postcards for discussion at next organising group meeting.

All the photos from the day can be found here

Notes of DWI Committee Meeting on 23 November 2013

DWI Committee Meeting

23 November 2013
Various energy saving events are being planned – Green Doors trail, a Public Energy Saving event in Autumn 2014, a Draught-busting programme, and the hire of a thermal camera so you can identify where heat is being lost.

We are working on a Deal Spring Clean event to involve as many community organisations as possible.
Following the success of the Breaking Ice showing we hope to arrange future film shows.

A Winter Solstice Fair is being planned at the Landmark Garden on 21 December, weather permitting.

Planning is under way for a seed and produce-swop early next year.

On a more bureaucratic note we are going to move forward to gain formal accreditation as Deal’s Transition Town Group.

Finances are relatively healthy at the moment but our fairly ambitious plans for 2014 will require a more intensive fundraising programme – details to follow.
Next meeting 11th January 2014.

DWI Permaculture Meeting April 2011

We had a small but perfectly engrossed audience for our monthly Deal With It meeting on Permaculture.

Dave Jones, the Head of Rippledown Environmental Centre at Ringwould, gave a clear and inspiring outline on how permaculture works to transform individuals and communities.

Behind the jargon there is much which people would recognise and with  'recovered' skills and knowledge on how we interact with nature gives a real way to live your life in a sustainable way. It was great fun and there was lively discussion. The Garden Sharers in the audience were very taken with digging-less future!

Rippledown have a open 'fun' day on Sunday the 5th June. Deal With IT will also be promoting the Centre's 2 day and 72hr courses on Permaculture amongst supporters later in the year.

A big thank you to Dave for a informative and energizing talk.

DWI Meeting Report - Green energy for beginners

Deal With It's Energy Group meeting about domestic renewable energy was very well attended by about 35 people and it was standing room only!

We were treated to an excellent presentation by Ian and David from Vaillant, leaders in both renewable energy and energy efficiency.

They told us about ground source heat pumps, solar thermal water heating as well as mechanical ventilation and heat recovery systems and explained about the Renewable Heating Incentives (RHI). Jason, our local 'green' plumber, explained the ethos behind his business and how he had moved into solar thermal technology to expand.

There was lots of time for people to ask questions and for one to one conversations between audeince and speakers while refreshments were served.

The Energy Group of Deal With It plans to offer help and advice to anyone in the Deal area who wants to consider greening their home or business, and believes that one day Deal could generate a large proportion of its own energy as does a similar sized town in Denmark!Contact us at energy@dealwithit.org

An excellent evening!

(thanks to Vicki for the report & Rosie R for the photos)
