Landmark Garden work completes

We have finished the first stage of the remodelling of the Landmark Garden today - all in time for next Saturday's Seedy Saturday.

This involved removing the central bed and getting a wood chip mulch down as a temporary surface.

The landmark centre is looking at a different surface for later in the year.

The intention is to increase the usage of the Garden as a public space with more people space for events, the cafe and use it as an out-door room.

We are also putting in a willow bank raised bed later this week. We will use the decanted top soil for some beds in the rear area of the Landmark Centre

Many thanks to Imogen, Steve, Rose, Rose, Wilf, Vicky for the mammoth job shifting 10tons of soil and removing the wall.

Thank you to kind person at the centre who lent us his kanga hammer drill and to George at Mongeham Logs for the woodchip and assistance. see you all at seedy saturday ...

Deal Seedy Saturday 30th May

Deal With It’s  next Deal Seedy Saturday will be on Saturday 30th May between 11am to 1ish at the Landmark Community Garden Deal High St

The Seedy Saturday is a plant and seed swap – people are encouraged to bring or donate any extra plants they are growing (mainly edibles) and perhaps try something different to grow.

We also actively encourage people to try their hand at growing some fruit, herbs or veg. We have our experts there to share knowledge and get people started growing.

This edition of Seedy will also have stalls from The Chocolution, AnSugan Recycled accessories and The Wild Kitchen Foraging with Lucia Stuart.

We also have the Sunshine Ukes, Deal’s premier Ukulele band playing from Noon.

All this happens in the Landmark Garden on Deal’s celebrated High Street .

The community garden is run by volunteers from Deal With It (Deal’s local community Green Group) and has a wonderful array of edible & wildlife friendly native planting designed by our head gardener Imogen Kitching

Our Limes trees get a hair cut @ Landmark

We gave our Lime Trees at the Landmark Garden a hair cut today.

The two main trees were reduced by a third and the sucker was removed. This will greatly add light to the garden at the front as well as maintaining the trees.

The Limes Tress are an important feature of garden - not only do they help frame, support wildlife  and shade but are also a vital part of the edible aspect of the garden. You should try some new lime leafs in a spring salad!

A big thank you to George Kitching and Crew from Mongeham Logs who donated their time, equipment and expertise for the Tree Surgery.

Thanks also to all the volunteers who supported this on a cold morning from the Landmark Centre and Garden.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused to anyone using the High Street this morning ...

'A thousand lights to chase the darkness'

We had a really great afternoon and fantastic response to our Winter Solstice celebration 'A thousand lights to chase the darkness'.

It was great to see the number and range of people dropping in - many bringing jars and lights others just wandering in from some shopping.

It was gentle and magical; a great example of the community coming together on a winter's afternoon.

The mulled elderflower wine was going down faster than we could cook it.

The oysters were flying out of their shells and cobb nuts were wolfed down.

We had great entainment from the Sunshine Ukes and Roisin Murray told us some winter stories.
Nick and Kieran from Chocolution came with real chocolate treats.

We had Lucia Stuart from the Wild Kitchen with her foraged oysters from Minnis Bay in a roman style.

Roisin had brought samples of "foraged" goodies such as bramble chutney, sloe gin, blackberry and redcurrent vodka

The fruiters in the town market had kindly donated an array of fruit.

Lots of people mucked in and helped openning oysters, lighting candles, cooking nuts, clearing up, singing, telling stories, bringing jars and lights to make it a great success.

It was a great way to end our second year in the Landmark Garden.

Thank you all for coming and contributing.

Happy Winter Solstice and Love from Deal With It + the Landmark Gardeners (Imogen, Tracy and Steve) x

Deal's first 'Seedy Saturday'

The weather was kind to us for today's first 'Seedy Saturday' at the Landmark Community Graden.

Lots of people had donated seeds, plants, compost and the kind folk at 'Buster's Bits' in St George's Walk also donated a number of seed kits and Chris from 'need for seed'.

We took £40 in donations which will go directly to support our 'Grow Deal' work.

Imogen brought her cute wood burner which added to the atmosphere. :)

Many thanks to everyone you donated seeds. Special thanks to Tracy, Imogen, Adrian and Sue, Sarah and Steve for helping to organise and volunteering on the day.

We plan to make 'Seedy Saturdays' a quarterly event at the Landmark but to reflect the seasons.

Next one will be on Saturday 24th May 11am-1pm

DEAL COMMUNITY FARMERS’ MARKET BRINGING LOCAL PRODUCE TO LOCAL PEOPLE

DEAL COMMUNITY FARMERS’ MARKET BRINGING LOCAL PRODUCE TO LOCAL PEOPLE
Launching on Friday 7th March 2014, the Deal Community Farmers’ Market promises to be an exciting new market for Deal. Based in the Landmark Centre, on the first Friday of every month, from 9-1pm.

The aim is to help local people take ownership of their food and where it comes from. This will include fresh produce, high quality artisan food/drink and a small range of local crafts - all from local producers, in Deal and within a 30 mile radius.

The Landmark Centre provides an indoor High Street Location, enabling the market to operate all year, without rain dampening events! There is plenty of parking available in the main town car parks too. Refreshments will be available from the Spires Cafe with a comfy seating area for enjoying those fresh treats with a hot tea/coffee.

As we want to give something extra back to the local community, we will support a different local Charity every month and we will be running a raffle/tombola with donation tins dotted around the market. We are also looking for local groups who would be interested in offering children’s activities, like cake decorating and produce tasting.

Originally thought up by Christine Tonks, who runs the local pet treat business, Presents For Paws. “After attending a range of events last summer, I realised Deal was in true need of a large and varied Farmers’ Market to help the local residents choose high quality items from their local producers. I look forward to greeting you all at the grand opening, on Friday the 7th March, 9-1pm, with a fantastically diverse range of local produce and a few surprises along the way!"

The market has now gained new supporters who will volunteer their time both on the day and with all aspects of marketing and local awareness. This includes the full support of the Kent Farmers’ Market Association, who will be helping ensure the market is of a high standard and fits into the Deal town ethos, particularly since winning the Telegraphs “High Street Of The Year” Award.

For any stall-holder/charity enquiries, please contact the Market Manager at dealfarmersmarket@icloud.com or call 07967 500 100.
