Deal FairTrade Fortnight 23rd Feb to 8th March

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT – 23RD FEBRUARY TO 8TH MARCH 2015
MAKE TRADE FAIR AND STOCK IT

“Make Trade Fair” and “Stock It” are the two themes running through Fairtrade Fortnight and throughout the year.

To celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight, the Dover Mayor, Cllr. Pam Brivio, together with Dover and Deal Fairtrade Networks, is hosting a reception at Dover Town Council on Wednesday 25th February from 6pm to 8pm. The Co-op Group is providing a wine tasting and Barbara Crowther from the Fairtrade Foundation will be updating the guests on what is happening with Fairtrade.

To let local residents know about these two campaigns Deal Town Fairtrade Network, a newly formed group, will be organising stalls at the following events:

  • At the Friday Market in the Undercroft at Deal Town Hall on Friday 27th February from 9am to 1pm.

  • After Mass in St. Andrew’s Church Hall from 11.30am to 12.15pm
  • At the Friday Market in the Undercroft at Deal Town Hall on Friday 6th March from 9am to 1pm.
  • In the West Street Co-op on Saturday 7th March from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

Deal Fairtrade Fortnight 2013

From East Kent Mercury

"Fairtrade supporters in the Dover and Deal area will be campaigning from Sunday at  schools, businesses, coffee mornings and lunches to kick-start this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight.
There will also be a chance to take part in a meeting with Henry Matenda from Kasinthula Sugar Cane Growers’ Association in Malawi, south east Africa.
Pam Brivio, secretary of Dover Fairtrade Town Network, said: “These Meet the Producer events are a wonderful opportunity to hear about the lives of producers and the difference that Fairtrade makes to their communities.”
Fairtrade Fortnight continues until March 10 and, following on from 2012’s Take a Step theme, the slogan for this year is Go Further for Fairtrade in 2013. ... full story here

Report back on Thanet Fairtrade Island....

World Food day and Climate Change Conference
Fairtrade Island Thanet “United Against Hunger”
From the Hall full of varied stalls of both local and National/International associations and groupings to the platform of varied speakers, this was a great day out.

Organised with great flair by Tammy Stewart-Jones of Fairtrade it was both informative and enjoyable, and deserved to have had a much larger attendance.

Lucy Siegle chaired the conference with a light touch; the eight speakers included Laura Vicery, International Development adviser to the Co-operative, Toby Quantrill of the Fairtrade Foundation, Duncan Williamson of WWF, May Kidd of Associated Countrywomen of the world, Dr Julian Oram of the World Development Movement, Robert James of Thanet Earth, and Laura Sandys MP for Thanet (nice to hear an MP who really gets Climate Change).

A wide range of views and not a dud amongst them!

If you have any interest at all in food (and the refreshments were excellent too) you must put October 16th in your diary for next year now!

Thank you Rosemary for your report
