Deal With It presented our colleagues in Canterbury Greenpeace with a cheque for £200 for their 'Save the Arctic' campaign today at the Astor.
The money was the proceeds from the very successful film show 'Chasing Ice' at the Astor at the end of November.
John Halladay from Greenpeace said "
The Arctic is a precious, beautiful region that faces an unprecedented threat. Oil companies are moving north, seeking to exploit its resources, while climate change is causing the Arctic to change beyond recognition. Three-quarters of the sea ice has melted since summer 1980, and scientists
predict the Arctic Ocean could be ice free in the next few decades. If that comes to pass it will be the
first time since humans developed our civilisation.
The only reason oil companies can drill there is because the ice is retreating. They’re drilling for the
oils that caused the melting in the first place. It’s crazy. We have to draw a line in the ice and say to
the oil companies, ‘You come no further’. That’s why Greenpeace has held peaceful protests in the
American, Norwegian, Greenlandic and Russian Arctic.
The Arctic is a region that could not cope with an oil spill of the magnitude of the Deepwater Horizon
disaster. It is forbidding, with darkness six months of the year, and ice returning every winter. BP
needed 6,000 boats to deal with the consequences of the Gulf of Mexico blow-out, but the Arctic
does not have an infrastructure to react at anything like that level.
The money raised by Deal With It will help to fund actions and campaigns to protect the Arctic - before it's too late."

'Chasing Ice' - Film Show Deal 17th Nov
Deal With It has organised a screening of the award winning film 'Chasing Ice' on Sunday 17th November at 7:30pm at the Astor Community Theatre. Cost is £5
Chasing Ice is an extraordinarily stark and beautiful film by acclaimed photographer James Balog.Proceeds of the film show will go towards Greenpeace's 'Save the Arctic' Campaign which is trying to protect this fragile environment.
Colleagues from Canterbury Greenpeace will be doing a short talk after the 76min film ends and will have a stall with campaign material.
In Chasing Ice, Balog deploys revolutionary time-lapse cameras to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers. His hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate.
For more details on the film see their website - Film Trailer below:

4.15 pm – ‘Green Benediction’ by Greenpeace
Additional Logistics
Trains from Canterbury arrive at Dover Priory at 9.48am, 10.27am and 10.48am.
We have a large van which will be following us along the route, just in case anyone needs a rest.
Joining Points
Deal is a good option for those who are slightly uncomfortable in the saddle to return to Canterbury via Dover by train.
Another alternative is for people to catch a train from Dover to Deal and start their cycle ride there.
Spokes will be bringing hand held radios which have a 5 mile range and will be used by the leader and backstop on the ride. Like most Spokes rides we aim to go at the speed of the slowest rider and the speed of the ride will be dictated by the backstop.
Leaving Points
We pass close to Deal, Adisham, Aylesham and Bekesbourne stations for those who want to leave the ride along the way.

Something fishy....
Two very successful campaigns underway:
(1) Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has made a plea for support for a campaign to try and stop wasteful fish discards.
Half of the fish caught in the North Sea is thrown back overboard dead due to the current quota system imposed by the EU Common Fisheries Policy.
The Fish Fight Campaign will officially launch with a broadcast of “Hugh’s Fish Fight” presented by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall in January 2011.
Thousands have already signed up to support the cause, and Client Earth is also on board.
If you are at all interested in the future of our oceans, and the future of fish as food, then please go to www.fishfight.net and check out phase 1 of the campaign.
2) Greenpeace's Tuna Campaign. As you may have read we were all set to take action against Tesco this weekend when the unexpected happened. We have produced a league table of the best and worst offenders against tuna (fishing with fish attraction devices, seine purse nets etc) and had identified that Tesco were the worst own-brand supplier. When Tesco learned of this, and that Greenpeace were preparing a nationwide weekend of direct action against them, they agreed to change all their own-brand tuna to rod and line by the end of 2012. Good for them. But it means our campaigning has to take a different tack. We will be doing it a bit differently but will now target Princes tuna in the hope of making them see the light.
The Tesco result is great news, it really shows that we can make a difference.http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/
