CLOSURE OF RICHBOROUGH TIP WILL IMPACT ON DEAL

Thanks to Harold at the Deal Web for this  - http://www.dealweb.org.uk

A group campaigning against the possibility of Kent County Council closing the Richborough Household Waste Centre is urging people to sign its petition.

The Richborough Action Group (RAG) say that closure of the tip near Sandwich would lead to congestion at neighbouring tips in Deal and Margate, environmental damage through longer car journeys and, very probably, more fly-tipping.

For local residents on the Southwall Road and Middle Deal Road routes to the Deal waste tip the prospect of increased traffic is seen as especially unwelcome.

To sign the petition or comment, go to: www.saverichboroughtip.co.uk/.

Save Ricborough Recycling Site - Meeting 20th April

Richborough HWRS    Your skills and time are needed

KCC Cabinet member, Bryan Sweetland, has confirmed his decision to close Richborough Household Waste and Recycling Site on the Ramsgate Road, with effect from the end of the current contract, August 2013.

We have 16 months to change his mind.

This closure will affect residents in Deal, Margate and Whitfield/Dover with increased numbers of people using their facilities, with increased traffic and queues to and from these sites.

Additionally, it will vastly inconvenience people in and around Sandwich, Ramsgate and Broadstairs as well as the villages from Cliffs End to Ash, from Worth to Eastry, and beyond.

If you could actively help the campaign at any time during the next 16 months, we need to hear from you URGENTLY.  Please write to Richborough Action Group (R.A.G.) at:  73 The Street, Ash, near Sandwich, Kent CT3 2EN or email LOFFMAN@jhanson.fsnet.co.uk

We are meeting at the
United Reform Church in Sandwich on 20th April at 7.30 p.m.  Please do attend and let’s ensure , by our words and deeds, that we can persuade KCC to change their decision.

DWI Recycle meeting 27th Sept

We had Brian Rumbelow from Dover District Council to speak to engaged audience of about twenty tonight at the Deal With It monthly meeting on the Council's new collection and recycling contract.

There has been a lot local comment on the scheme which has been understandably focussed on the practicalities of the 'wheelie bin' rather than the positive step to reduce our waste going to landfill. Brian gave us some good information on the positive recycling levels achieved in Shepway (it is a joint contract with DDC) in the last few weeks.

A lively set of  questions on the scheme and how we need to go beyond just recycling and look at reuse 'waste' and reduce our consumption. See details at DDC website

Amber Bytheway also spoke on her national petition campaign to stop the use of plastic bags and what happening locally - she is approaching several of the large supermarkets to take up her initative (if you have not signed please follow the link here)

What a 'Waste' of an evening!

What a 'Waste' of an evening!
Report on DWI Meeting 'What do we do with Waste' 22nd Feb 2011

A cold 22 February 2011 saw some 25 interested supporters treated to 4 excellent talks on the subject of 'Waste'.

Graeme Lawes, from the East Kent Partnership (joint body formed by Dover, Thanet and Shepway Councils), started off the evening and brought us up to date on the proposed recycling and waste service due to begin in the autumn.

Daphne Tutton followed Graeme and emphasised the importance of not wasting food and told us about some of the dishes we could make with leftovers.

Ruth Searle from White Cliffs Freegle told us how the web site came into being, how to become a member, how to use it and the physical and mental benefits.

Geoff Warren gave us a very visual presentation about what can be done with furniture that had been scrapped but had been rescued and restored. Refreshments were then served and discussions continued for some time before the evening was brought to a close.

Thank you Vicki for organising and the report and Rose Dowd for the Photos

KCC starts consultation on Minerals & Waste

The Minerals and Waste Core Strategy Issues consultation summarises the current evidence base regarding minerals and waste issues in Kent. It is the first stage in the Minerals and Waste Development Framework plan making process.
The document sets out issues and possible options for consideration; this is an opportunity to have your say on minerals and waste issues and help to shape the next stage of the consultation process. Each chapter contains specific questions we would like your views on, and we also welcome any general comment on our document.
The public consultation will be live for eight weeks from 24 September to 19 November 2010.

Victoria's Green Matters - 2nd Sept

Deal With IT's Secretary Victoria Nicholls writes a regular column in the East Kent Mercury:
Shoppers in Britain have done well over the last few years to reduce the amount of plastic bags they use. In fact, 43% fewer bags were used in 2009/10 than in 2006, when records were first kept. Figures collected from the top eight supermarkets show that total bag usage fell by 10% during the past year.

The Waste & Resources Action Programme (Wrap) informs us that figures for May this year tend to show that this reduction in use has slowed down. There was a voluntary agreement between the government, the British Retail Consortium and the supermarkets to decrease the number of plastic bags handed out to shoppers by 50% by spring 2009. Wrap reported that by May last year retailers had achieved a 48% reduction. A rate of reduction of 45% has been achieved this year, showing a drop since the voluntary agreement ended.

Can we really congratulate ourselves? Of course, to reduce the use of plastic to any degree is to be applauded but we must continue this reduction until plastic bags are not given out in shops at all, as in mainland Europe. Campaigners want continued reduction in plastic bag use and if this does not happen voluntarily, then they want to see a bag tax. This was spectacularly effective in Eire where a price per bag of 10 pence was introduced and a 95% reduction in use was achieved. This serves to emphasise that a resource is usually squandered if it is free and easily available but if it has a price, it is valued more greatly.

It is easy to see, when we visit some supermarkets, that although bags have been removed from the holders at the end of the conveyor belts with the intention that shoppers must ask if they need a bag, assistants are now placing opened bags out for customer use.  Please remember to take your own bags with you and let’s try to end the use of plastic bags completely.
