Victoria's Green Matters 21st Feb 2013

Deal With IT's Secretary Victoria Nicholls writes a regular column in the East Kent Mercury:
What a to do about the discovery of horse meat in convenience food! Well, you get what you pay for in this life and we have allowed big business to tell us that we want cheap, fast food that is leading to an explosion of obesity and diabetes in Western cultures.

We react with horror when we learn that horse meat has been discovered in the food that millions of people have been eating as a matter of course for years. There is no evidence that horse meat is in any way more harmful than any other kind of meat – the French have always eaten it – but shouldn’t our horror be reserved for the under-cover dealings that have led to someone substituting horse meat for beef?

There has to be suspicion that the power of the supermarket has some responsibility for this situation. To continue to make us believe that we need to buy cheap food, they have to continually chase their suppliers for cheaper and cheaper food production to put items on the shelves. Is it any wonder that producers also look for other ways to cut costs and increase profits?

Fifty years ago we used to spend 40% of our income on food. Today it is 10% and the quality of the food that we put on the table has suffered as a result.

We need to buy our food locally, know where it comes from and, most of all, learn to cook!
