Fareshare Cabbage Glean 28th Feb 2022

Thank you to our volunteers (Clair, Sarah G, Sarah L, Sonja, Julie, Elaine, Lucy, Sally, Tim, Renate & Steve) on today cabbage glean for @FareShareKent we collected about 750kgs today from a farm in Stourmouth. 

We have Gleaned 4 tons of food so far in 2022!

Deal Station Garden workday Sat 26th Feb 2022

 

The Deal Station Gardeners were out on Saturday on their monthly tidy up of the planters on the platforms and Spring has sprung at the Station Garden.

A pleasant and social sunny afternoon's gardening today: lots of primroses, and other spring flowers, broad beans, onions and small harvest of sprouts

Sandown Beach Clean 27th Feb 2022

#PickDealClean are national finalists in litter award #LitterHeros

Community group Pick Deal Clean’s outstanding achievements were recognised when they became deserving finalists in the #Litterheroes Award category at the Keep Britain Tidy Network Conference 2022.

DDC nominated the litterpicking group for their outstanding contribution to the local environment and their efforts to reduce litter.

Litterpicking volunteers in the district go above and beyond to support council street cleaning services, and work in partnership with DDC to make the district a better place to live.

Pick Deal Clean originally focused on litterpicking during the pandemic but have gone on to develop into so much more. Inspired by the arts, they support DDC’s shared goal of changing behaviour in respect to litter, and strive to reduce the act of littering in inventive and inspiring ways.

They have done this by:
Raising awareness through specific events*
Mobilising and inspiring community volunteering
Creating an interactive google map for their regular pickers to take ownership of areas and ensure their efforts are spread across Deal
Using social media to organise and coordinate litterpicking events
Establishing a network of contacts to resolve issues raised by their members in their community
Working with DDC and engaging in liaison meetings

Cllr Martin Bates, Cabinet member for the Environment, said: “I would like to congratulate Pick Deal Clean in reaching the final list for Keep Britain Tidy’s #Litterheroes Award. Not every hero wears a cape, in fact some come armed with a picker and a hi viz jacket and I sincerely thank Pick Deal Clean and all our other local individuals and community groups for the role they play in helping to keep the district clean.”

Helen Charlton, one of the Founding members of Pick Deal Clean, said: “Pick Deal Clean members are delighted to achieve Runner Up for this national award. We have been established for just under a year and this shows that by working together we can all make such a difference to where we live, making our local areas cleaner and more environmentally friendly for the benefit of everyone.”

The Great British Spring Clean is an annual event supported by DDC and local litter- picking volunteers to clear litter from streets, parks and beaches.

New Year Day's Beach Clean 1/1/2022

Thank you to our nearly 60 volunteers on todays Community Beach Clean who got 2022 off to a good start - 12 full bags of rubbish collected.

Big thanks to our organising volunteers - Lucy, Rose, Sonja, Vicki, Charles & Steve

In 2021 we managed to do 9 community cleans with about 166kgs collected with 549 volunteer hours

We are still awaiting details for the February clean date.

Orchard Progress at the Captains Garden

 

Garden and Orchard in 1872

Just a quick Xmas update on our plans for the orchard at the Captain's Garden @ Deal Castle. 

We been very lucky to have been working with Brogdale, the home of the national fruit collection, to design the orchard and pick for us interesting varieties which will thrive at the garden. 

They have selected some 65 different varieties for us with lovely names like Chorister Boy, Laxton’s Fortune, Marjorie’s Seedling Plum and Neville Copeman just to name a few. 

The trees will be specially grafted & grown for us by Brogdale which great part of the story. 

We will be planting the first 35 trees in January, then in the spring we are building a Victorian stepover with 16 apples and pears and the remaining 69 trees will be delivered in December 2022 - in total there will be at least 120 trees. 

The design of the orchard follows the original garden layout from 1800s to 1872 and is part of the English Heritage's Conservation Statement for the Garden

We will be doing another post in January on our public planting day which people can get involved with. 

All this is possible because of our successful Crowdfunding Kent project in 2021 which raised £6500 from about 90 different individuals and local organisations including Deal Rotary Club, Inner Wheel Club of Deal and KCC.

New Years Day Beach Clean - Saturday 1st January 2022

 

Deal Town Plan Survey

The Deal Town Plan Survey has been running since 22nd November and will close at the end of the year.

We’re asking everyone in Deal to answer three questions to help shape the future of the town:

• What's good about Deal?
• What do you not like about Deal?
• What could be done to make Deal even better?

It’s a time for giving and that third question is an opportunity for people to suggest a gift for Deal.

Everyone’s answers will contribute to the creation of a new plan for Deal. This will contain a series of actions derived from the survey, that the council will actively pursue, whether on its own or with partners such as Dover District Council or Kent County Council.

The Town Plan Survey, asking these three questions, is available at www.deal.gov.uk until the end of 2021. With just over a week to go we’re still keen to hear from as many people in Deal as possible.

Thank you to our 40 volunteers on today's Walmer Beach Clean - we picked about 15 bags of rubbish approx 25kgs.
